Julia Hughes - writing thrilling adventures - time after time after time.
This Sunday is your last chance to download "THE GRIFFIN'S BOY" at the special promotional launch price of only 99 cents, or 77p. It's also my last day of work at the website, although Mervyn will continue to meet and greet our guests at Words Unlimited. We're heading south of the Tamar, and spending Christmas with our Cornish Cousins.
You're all warmly invited to spend Christmas with the Celtic Cousins. The River Gods (may they smile on you too) have made "A RAUCOUS TIME" free on both the US and UK sites, so come and join me in Cornwall! To celebrate, and as a way of saying thank you to friends and fellow time travelers, "A RIPPLE IN TIME" is free on Smashwords - but only until Midnight December 24th. Just enter the code WF46W on the check-out page. While you're at Smashwords, don't forget to pick up your free copy of "CROMBIE'S CHRISTMAS", a short story that sees poor old Crombie trapped in the Italian equivalent of the House of Usher. Though even that may be preferable to his usual misadventures with the Celtic Cousins - some people just don't know when they're having fun!
From today, the sun begins to return to this little corner of the world. We can't all be at Stonehenge, celebrating the Winter Solstice, but you can travel there with the Celtic Cousins. Enjoy the time travel adventure "A RIPPLE IN TIME" absolutely free, in any format you desire, including Mobi for kindle, and ePub for smart phones etc.
Use the coupon code WF46W when prompted by the Smashwords' Check out page here:
THE CELTIC COUSINS' ADVENTURES Begin with "A Raucous Time" - also FREE!
A Ripple in Time is book 2 in The Celtic Cousins' Adventures.
In Book 1 "A Raucous Time" Celtic Cousin Rhyllann experiences the birth of Stonehenge. A Raucous Time is perma free on Smashwords, or Amazon.com. If you're after a Christmas read, Detective Inspector Crombie, usually the law of London, is trapped in the Italian equivalent of the House of Usher, "Crombie's Christmas" reminds us of this little island's gift to the world.
Email mervyn@talonpublishing[dot]com if you have any difficulty downloading any of these titles, and he'll shoot you over a mobi copy.
More of a Griffin Riders' fan? Ride out with THE GRIFFIN'S BOY!
Until midnight Sunday, you can download THE GRIFFIN'S BOY at the special launch price of only 99 cents, 77p. And okay, he's my editor, and he has to say nice things, but in Mervyn's opinion, if you enjoyed THE GRIFFIN CRYER, you'll love THE GRIFFIN'S BOY.
SYNOPSIS: In a world where only those of noble birth are invited to join the elite Griffin Riders, orphan Neb is destined for a life of drudgery. His path changes when he steals the disobedient young griffin Balkind in an attempt to prove that you don't need noble blood to become a hero.
Join "The Griffin's Boy" on the adventure of a lifetime as he encounters girls for the very first time, learns the meaning of friendship and battles evil forces for his very soul.
The Griffin Cryer flew into Amazon's top 100 overall free download charts and landed at #77 overall in the US, and #45 Fantasy in the UK. Best of all, Frankie and her friends snagged new five star reviews from readers on both sides of the Atlantic. I'm truly grateful, and massive thanks to everyone who helped make this promotion a mahousive success.
The fun don't stop! An executive decision has been made to extend the special promotional price of 99 cents, 77p for "The Griffin's Boy" until Sunday, 20th December, and there's still time to enter the Great Griffin Giveaway - details on the official Griffin Riders website.
Launch day was a little earlier than planned, (but then I knew the griffins were getting a little over excited,) and The Griffin's Boy swooped into the top 100 in the Action/Adventure/Romance genre. With a little help from friends as always. A mahousive thanks to all our lovely hosts on the Flying Book Tour – today the griffins are landing at Dan and Sean Campbell's 90 day novel site. Come on over and say hi. Dan's getting the pizzas in!
LAST CHANCE TO CATCH "THE GRIFFIN CRYER" FOR FREE

Frankie and her friends have enjoyed a brilliant run, staying in or around the top 20 free Urban Fantasy Charts … and even better news, (for me at least), both my griffin riders' chronicles books picked up shiny new five star reviews. I'm very grateful to all my readers, without you, the story isn't complete.
Thank you to all my treasured readers, especially Dody, who stuck with "The Griffin's Boy" from inception to launch, and helps so many adult learners discover their wings too.
Barely a week after they were mentioned, the river gods have smiled at the Celtic Cousins' Adventures – "A Raucous Time" is now free to download from Amazon.com. Meantime – every reader in the world can become a Griffin Rider – at least until Midnight EST time Sunday.

"The Griffin's Boy" - an early escape & special promotional offer!
My regular readers will know Sunday is also the official launch day for "The Griffin's Boy". However, in order to have the ebook ready to be downloaded from Amazon, we needed to upload the files prior to release (naturally). An executive decision has been taken – and as a special introductory offer, you can grab "The Griffin's Boy" for only 99 cents, or around 77p.
That's a kindle tingler and if you're still in need of something extra to stack under your Christmas tree – we've two griffins up for adoption. Simple and free to enter, our two first prize winners will see their chosen griffin names in print. Full details at the official griffin rider website or catch up with the Flying Book Tour at Toni's Everything Books & Authors A fabulous site where you'll find sacks and sacks of Christmas goodies!
Confession time - I'd rather be writing books than selling them. So when Amazon introduced KDP select free days, I saw this as an absolute gift.
Then Amazon changed the rules slightly (their ball, their pitch, their game) and going free now no-longer results in the same sales ranking lift. Those who study markets and know about these things predict that the writing is on the wall, and advise authors that going free should no longer be considered as a short cut to fame and fortune. Bad news for those who loath marketing - like me. However, I'm going to continue using KDP, and not just because I'm bone idle. Simply because it all becomes worth while, when not just one, but two readers enjoyed my recent giveaway "An Explosive Time" enough to say so publicly. Thank you guys! You've given me all the encouragement I need.
And tomorrow, The Griffin Cryer is free - for a whole five days - from Wednesday 11th December right through to the launch of "The Griffin's Boy", on 15th December. You didn't really think you were getting away without a plug did you? Many of you've already downloaded "The Griffin Cryer" to your kindles. If you have read, and enjoyed, please take time out to tell others - and maybe even consider writing a review. An easy way to earn good karma:)
I may have mentioned previously(!) but I'm entirely grateful to friends old and new for their help in bringing "The Griffin's Boy" to readers' attention. Today's the day we take flight, and hopefully see you over on "The Serious Reader" for the start of the Flying Book Tour - aka as The Great Griffin Giveaway. If you do have a book related site, and you'd like to share this promotion with your readers, then it couldn't be easier. Zoom on over to here: http://www.griffinriders.com/book-blast-html-for-bloggers.html and enter the top secret password GGG - if you like what you see, simply copy and paste into your own blog.
FREE! From tomorrow until 15th December - The Griffin Cryer.
With the ebook files complete, I've become extremely fond of all those (you know who you are) who helped make "The Griffin's Boy" the story it has become. I think it's something special. But then, I would say that - wouldn't I?
I also want to say a massive thank you to all these fantastic, couldn't be without them, wouldn't be without them, people who have agreed to host what's going to be the most exciting tour ever. I cannot wait to meet all your readers, and talk about "The Griffin's Boy" launch on Sunday 15th December.
The Great Griffin Giveaway Kicks Off Tomorrow - First stop:
As though there's not enough excitement around at this time of year, every time I click onto facebook, there's another post from one of my favourite authors, sharing their latest achievements and well deserved success!
This morning I gave an especially loud squeal at this post from Charlie:
if you're still searching around for Christmas Presents, Charlie's collected stories "100 Little Words on Parenthood, as told by Parents, Grandparents and Experts" is sure to be a hit with all ages and genders. Available in paperback or ebook format, I'd be delighted to find a copy under my Christmas tree.
If you're on facebook, go and say "Hi" to Charlie - you'll be so glad you did, as she brightens everyone's day!
These last couple of weeks, Terry Lander's kept our family entertained with his new radio show "Train of Thought", broadcasting from Radio Redruth. So while on Facebook, I hopped over to his new page, and now wish I hadn't! If you've listened to Terry's show, you'll know it's packed with fun, music and special guests. So no surprise that one of the big names in entertainment has agreed to play a part in his show. No surprise either that Terry is teasing us - we have to wait until Friday before he makes his big announcement! When Terry says he's snared a big name, you just know it's going to be a BIG name! Can't wait - another reason to count down the days till Christmas!
Terry Lander, CEO of Lyvit Publishing, author of the outrageous "Banned" and the hilariously original "Kama Slumber" adds another string to his bow. Terry now presents "Train of Thought" for Radio Redruth - and good news - there's a listen again feature, and even if you didn't miss his show on Friday, it's so worth listening again. For most of the show, we were on the floor, laughing. "Pound Shop Album" and "Chess Boxing" are just a few of the features that make Terry's show unmissable.
Also this week, my favourite Italian the ultra talented Monica LaPorta published not one, but two new stories. "Elios" and "Gaia". I've sneaked a peek at the samples, and immediately added to my list of must reads. As always Monica's prose is beautiful, while the artwork for the covers are stunning. These two romances with more than a touch of paranormal are certain to earn Monica even more fans.
These beautiful people tell the story of the same romance, but from their own point of view. Sounds absolutely enchanting, and Monica's agreed to appear on Words Unlimited to reveal the inspiration behind these two mirrored stories. For all her loyal readers, Monica has reduced the ebook price by two thirds. So be quick, and click on the images above to be taken to Amazon's download page, and keep your eyes on Words Unlimited, because you don't want to miss Monica's post! If you really can't wait, zoom on over to Monica's site, where you'll find lots of background information along with artwork to die for, and images of delicious Italian cuisine to kill for. Monica' Blog is here.
The Wonderful and much treasured Doreen "Dody" Cox, entered Words Unlimited short story contest
and Dody's story was short-listed as a finalist from the many many entries. Laura Wright LaRoche provided a free book cover, and our entrants based their short story to suit the image. Dody's memoirs "Adventures in Mothersitting" is a loving tribute to her mom, gaining Dody many admirers and helping many carers who find themselves acting out a parental role for their own parents.
Dody's own blog "Treasured Encounters" contains many short stories and poems, so I was thrilled to learn that Dody continued to hone her short story, and BRILLIANT NEWS has now published on Smashwords. Absolutely the most exciting news of the week - way to go Dody!
We've invited Dody over to Words Unlimited, and hopefully Dody will share the inspiration behind this mystical mystery which combines spiritual elements along with some very down to earth characters. After all this excitement, I'm off to celebrate down the Soldiers Return - and can't wait to discover what new treats lay in store for next week!
Ten days to go until "The Griffin's Boy" is launched on an unsuspecting public, and butterflies are getting ready to swarm. At times like this, a pet saying of my first boss rings truer than ever:
"You're not at school now, you don't get points for trying".
Although, writing isn't work, not in the strictest sense. It's a compulsion, a wanting. The need to explore other lives and different worlds, to know what happens next. Everyone has this need to tell a story, to find ears willing to listen. Fortunately, in this internet age, everyone can tell their stories to a wider audience, including me!
Naturally, I want others to share in these fictional adventures. In particular, to experience the magic of flying and the mystic of this other Britain. For the first time in his life, the griffin's boy disobeys orders; makes his own decisions, and so carves out his own fate. I want readers to relive the stomach churning realisation that choosing to follow your own dreams sometimes means going without a safety net; being dependent upon your own strength of character, and of course, the friends you've chosen to be by your side.
Points for trying don't count in the real world, but these stories want to be told, and I can only ever be the best I can be. It helps knowing that some fantastic alpha and beta readers have added their polishing finesse to "The Griffin's Boy". Even with only ten days to go, beta readers are still advising, and I'm especially grateful for their suggestions and even more grateful for their encouraging comments. Another boost arrives from previously unknown fellow adventurers dropping by and saying 'Hi there, enjoyed your story – thanks for the advance read.'
Thank you guys – it helps calm the butterflies a little!
The free promo for "An Explosive Time" is now over, but … "A Raucous Time", Book #1 in The Celtic Cousins' Adventures is free to download from Smashwords, and hopefully it won't be long before Amazon price match. Although some authors are left waiting months and even years before the river gods notice and deign to match their competitors. If you're aware that a title is available free on other sites, but Amazon haven't yet put that title on their free list, there's a link on every 'product page' to alert the sleeping giant of a lower price being offered by a competitor.
Although the Celtic Cousins' three titles belong in very different genres and can be read as stand alones, you can be sure of an adventurous time!
Wren Prenderson; "A Ripple in Time" best hero.
"The Griffin Cryer" best Urban Fantasy. Thank you to the hard working judges and everyone who voted at the eFestival of Words, organised by Julie Dawson, of Bards & Sages.
A Raucous Time, A Ripple in Time, and The Griffin Cryer. Thank you to Julie and her hard working panel of judges and reviewers.
